RE may be taught as part of your child's main topic but sometimes it will be taught in discrete lessons.

Our school has a long term plan which ensures that all of the main religions are taught at some point and knowledge is built upon. The children will not cover all of the main religions in each academic year. Please have a look at our policy for more information about the curriculum or speak to Mrs Miles, she will be happy to help!

We believe at this school that RE both supports and strengthens what we aim to do in every aspect of school life. Our caring ethos and the value which we place on the development of the whole child (spiritually, morally, socially culturally and intellectually) is reflected in the RE Curriculum.

RE also makes a key educational contribution to pupils' explorations of British values and will enable pupils to learn to think for themselves about British values.

Our aims with RE are threefold. These aims underpin the way we plan lessons so that children have the chance to explore religious views, as well as their own views, and start to develop their own understanding of the world. We hope to equip them with knowledge and understanding so that they can make their own choices in life, with respect for different views that people may have. RE is concerned with 'learning about religion' and 'learning from religion' and it is not the practice of this school to preach or convert children. The faith background of both children and staff is respected at all times.

Our aims are for children to:

A. Know about and understand a range of religions and world views, so that they can:

  • Describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices, recognising the diversity which exists within and between communities;
  • Identify, investigate and respond to questions posed by, and responses offered by some of the sources of wisdom1 found in religions and world views;
  • Appreciate and appraise the nature, significance and impact of different ways of life and ways of expressing meaning.

 

B. Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and world views, so that they can:

  • Explain reasonably their ideas about how beliefs, practices and forms of expression influence individuals and communities;
  • Express with increasing discernment their personal reflections and critical responses to questions and teachings about identity, diversity, meaning and value;
  • Appreciate and appraise varied dimensions of religion.

 

C. Gain and deploy the skills needed to engage seriously with religions and world views, so that they can:

  • Find out about and investigate key concepts and questions of belonging, meaning, purpose and truth, responding creatively;
  • Enquire into what enables different communities to live together respectfully for the wellbeing of all;
  • Articulate beliefs, values and commitments clearly in order to explain reasons why they may be important in their own and other people's lives.

Parents do have the right to request that their child be withdrawn from part or the whole RE curriculum. Please speak to your child's class teacher or Mrs Miles if you have any concerns or questions!
